You’ve all heard of Mandalay; Rudyard Kipling rhapsodised about the mystical, far-off land of Burma from the perspective of a British soldier who spent several years there, in ‘The Road to Mandalay’ and other writings.
What’s amazing is not that much has changed since he wrote that poem in 1890, except Burma is now known as Myanmar and it’s no longer part of the British Empire.
Comparatively speaking, Mandalay is a modern city founded only about 150 years ago, but it is an utterly fascinating place to visit.
